[A]Two-Sided argumentative essay
In a two-sided argumentative essay, we present both sides of an argument. Here, it is not necessary to persuade the reader to agree with a point of view.  However, we normally state which side we agree with in the conclusion.  The language of a two-sided argumentative essay may change depending on the subject of the essay and the intended audience.  As a general rule, it should have a logical structure so that they are easy to follow.


Useful Phrases / Language Support for:
Introductory / opening paragraph
You should introduce the essay by stating the argument and explaining that you will discuss both sides of it.
  • –.In this essay, I would like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of reclaiming land from Victoria Harbour. 
  • –.In this essay. I shall look at the argument for and against the popularity of electronic cards. 
  • –.I would like to share with you my views on the pros and cons of reclaiming land from Victoria Harbour. 


Body paragraphs
In the main body, you should first state the reasons to support argument.  Each reason should be written in a separate paragraph.  To introduce argument, you can say:

  • –.One advantage of reclaiming land from Victoria Harbour is that it can give... 
  • –.A clear advantage of reclaiming land from Victoria Harbour is... 
  • –.My first argument is that... 
  • –.A serious disadvantage of reclaiming land is that... 
  • –.Another argument in favour of reclamation is that... 
  • –.Another problem is that... 

While listing the argument, you can say:
  • –.First of all, it can... 
  • –.To begin with, there will be more lands for... 
  • –.Furthermore, with more lands, we can develop... 
  • –.Another important argument is that it has harmful effect on environment. 

Don't forget to include a bridging paragraph.  It helps to move the essay from discussing advantages to discussing disadvantages.  You can use these expressions in a bridging paragraph:
  • –.Although the points above show that there are major advantages to economy of Hong Kong, there are also... 
  • –.It is clear that there are strong reasons for the reclamation. However, there are also several disadvantages to consider. 

To make a general statement, you can say:
  • –.Generally speaking, reclaiming land is beneficial to Hong Kong. 
  • –.On the whole, it can help solve the problem of the shortage of land in Hong Kong. 


Concluding paragraph
In the closing paragraph, you should briefly summarize the advantages and disadvantages that you have presented in the essay.  It is also normal to state which side you agree with most.
